Spring Cleaning: How to Get Organized for Spring

The days are getting longer, the sunshine feels a tad warmer and the Spring Solstice is just around the corner. You know what that means – it’s a perfect time to clean up and get organized! Here are a few key things to keep in mind as you look for signs of Spring:

MAKE A GAME PLAN

Maybe you have got a garage full of boxes to sort through or an overflowing closet you’ve been meaning to tackle but here’s the bottom line: nothing gets done without a plan. To-do lists are great but prioritizing your needs is more efficient. If you’re looking to create more living space in your home or maximize closet space, start with the area that matters most to you right now. Those boxes in your garage can either be given away, donated or consolidated. And if your closet is full to the brim, chances are there are items in it that could be stored elsewhere – and more neatly. This is a great time to consider renting a self-storage unit to keep items you are not ready to part with but that do not necessarily need to live in your home with you.

GET CLEANING

Living in clutter creates chaos and causes anxiety. Decluttering, cleaning and organizing has shown to have positive effects on mental health including reducing stress and improving focus. As you declutter your closets, cupboards and shelves, take some time to assess whether any of the items you find there can be better stored in a storage locker. The goal is to keep things in your home that you make use of or need access to regularly. Anything that feels like it’s collecting dust but that you want to hold onto can be packed up and stored safely in storage. Once you’ve decluttered, then it’s time to get out that trusty duster and get rid of the cobwebs and dust bunnies before you put your things back in their new, designated place.

SWAP SEASONAL ITEMS

Warmer weather means barbecues and drinks on the patio. Get ready for the good times ahead by cleaning up your outdoor space and slowly setting up your grill and outdoor furniture. These kinds of seasonal items are easily and securely kept in storage, which frees up space in your home and keeps everything in good condition. Now is also a great time to pack up your winter gear – including sporting equipment, snow suits and winter clothes – and move them into storage as well. Having a storage unit for seasonal storage needs means you spend less time decluttering each year and more time enjoying your living space.

STAY ORGANIZED

Since you are already taking the time to clean up, one way to stay organized and reduce clutter moving forward is to label your boxes in storage and organize your closets and cupboards in a way that ensures you can access everything easily. This is where storage accessories like baskets, bins and clothing organizers really come in handy.

Put a little spring in your step by making a plan – and sticking to it. Prioritizing your needs, cleaning up your space and incorporating a self-storage unit to store seasonal items will not only make decluttering your living space so much easier but enjoyable, too!
